I arrived in Shigaraki on a misty morning. The air was thick with clay and history.
At the entrance of every shop stood a ceramic raccoon dog — big belly, straw hat, that silly grin.
They looked like they’d been waiting just for me.
Shigaraki-yaki has been made here in Shiga Prefecture since the 13th century.
The clay is coarse, the shapes are bold, and the textures — oh, the textures.
Each piece looks like it was born from the earth itself.
But the tanuki…
Ah yes, the tanuki statues. They’re not just decoration.
In Japan, they’re seen as symbols of good fortune and mischief — a bit of both, really.

店先には、どこもかしこも狸の焼き物――大きなお腹に、編笠をかぶって、ちょっととぼけた笑顔。
まるで、わしを待ってたかのようじゃった。
信楽焼は、滋賀県のこの町で13世紀から作られている。
土は荒く、形は大胆で、質感には深みがある。
まさに、大地そのものから生まれてきた器という感じじゃ。
それから、狸……
そう、あの狸の置物じゃ。
ただの飾りと思うなかれ。
日本では、福を呼ぶ縁起物でありながら、ちょっとしたいたずら者の象徴でもある。
